The Price of Freedom01

ACT I

FADE IN:

EXT. NEW YORK CITY - DAY

New York, 2044.

The skyline still shines. Banks trade. Trains run. Delivery drones cross between towers. Luxury cars glide past glass storefronts.

And beneath all of it -- armed checkpoints, public seizure notices, government screens displaying CIVIL STATUS classifications, and uniformed officers loading shackled workers into transport vehicles.

A giant screen over an avenue calmly announces:

ANNOUNCER (V.O.)

Property reassignment hearings for non-compliant households will resume Monday. Registered dependents must report with valid ownership or labor documentation.

Nobody stops to listen. Nobody looks surprised.

This is normal now.

EXT. MOTT HAVEN - SOUTH BRONX - DAY

DANIAL LEWIS, 30, thin and underfed, crouches beside a dumpster behind a closed grocery store.

He is not digging randomly.

He sorts.

Sealed canned food -- KEEP.

Broken tablet -- POSSIBLE PARTS.

Moldy bread -- DISCARD.

Copper wiring -- KEEP.

He works with the concentration of someone reviewing a project plan rather than scavenging garbage.

A patrol vehicle turns onto the street.

Danial immediately closes his bag, steps into the shadow of a loading dock, and waits.

The patrol passes.

The Price of Freedom02

Only then does he move again.

INT. DANIAL'S APARTMENT - DAY

Small. Old. Immaculately organized.

Danial places his finds on a table already divided into labeled containers.

FOOD.

ELECTRONICS.

TRADE.

REPAIR.

On a shelf sits a photograph of OLIVER and AMANDA LEWIS, smiling beside a much younger Danial.

Next to it, an old employee badge:

DANIAL LEWIS - PROJECT MANAGER - REED HOLDINGS.

Danial opens a kitchen cabinet.

Almost empty.

He makes coffee black and measures out half a can of beans.

His phone flashes a job listing from a government-connected logistics firm.

He stares at it.

Deletes it.

EXT. FORMER REED HOLDINGS BUILDING - DAY

Danial walks past a once-prestigious office tower.

Government workers seal the entrance.

A digital notice replaces the REED HOLDINGS logo.

PUBLIC NOTICE

ASSETS SEIZED UNDER STATE COMPLIANCE ACT

Images rotate on a screen -- GEORGE REED, OLIVIA REED, CLAIRE REED.

Danial stops.

He knows those faces.

A WOMAN beside him whispers to her husband.

WOMAN

They killed the parents.

The Price of Freedom03

Her husband grabs her arm.

HUSBAND

Keep walking.

They do.

So does Danial.

EXT. CITY STREET - LATER

A BUSINESSMAN argues with two officers beside a government van.

BUSINESSMAN

I filed the appeal. You have no right --

An officer punches him in the stomach, folds him into the van.

People on the sidewalk look down.

Danial does the same.

EXT. REED RESIDENCE - LATER

A black state vehicle idles at the curb.

Two armed men drag CLAIRE REED, early 30s, elegant even through exhaustion, down the steps of what used to be her family home.

Her wrists are bound.

CLAIRE

You're making a mistake. My father's case is still under review --

OFFICER

Your father's case is closed.

Claire sees Danial across the street.

For a second she does not believe it.

Then --

CLAIRE

Danial!

He stops.

She struggles against the men.

CLAIRE (CONT'D)

Danial, please!

The Price of Freedom04

Their eyes meet.

He looks at the rifles.

At the four armed men.

At himself.

CLAIRE (CONT'D)

Help me!

Danial's jaw tightens.

He lowers his eyes.

Walks away.

Claire stares after him as she is forced into the vehicle.

EXT. SIDE STREET - CONTINUOUS

Danial keeps walking.

Claire's voice follows him in memory.

CLAIRE (V.O.)

Danial, please!

He walks faster.

EXT. BRONX - DAY

Days later.

Danial scavenges in silence.

A discarded newspaper shows a small headline:

REED HEIRESS RECLASSIFIED - PROPERTY AUCTION PENDING.

Danial folds the paper over without reading further.

INT. ABANDONED BROWNSTONE - DAY

Danial moves through a stripped apartment, checking cabinets and broken furniture.

He finds an old wooden chest wedged beneath a collapsed shelf.

Inside -- tarnished silverware, useless papers, and a dark metal LAMP.

Danial turns it in his hands.

Could be worth something.

He wipes dust from the surface.

The room SHUDDERS.

The Price of Freedom05

Smoke twists upward.

Danial drops the lamp and stumbles back.

A figure forms from the smoke.

ZAHIR.

Ancient eyes. Regal posture. Something human-shaped but not quite human.

Danial grabs a broken chair leg.

DANIAL

Stay back.

Zahir looks at the chair leg, then at Danial.

ZAHIR

That is ambitious.

DANIAL

What are you?

ZAHIR

At the moment? Your servant.

DANIAL

No.

ZAHIR

An excellent beginning.

Danial edges toward the door.

DANIAL

I hit my head.

ZAHIR

You did not.

DANIAL

Gas leak.

ZAHIR

No.

DANIAL

Hallucination.

ZAHIR

Also no.

Zahir gestures to the lamp.

ZAHIR (CONT'D)

You found the vessel. You awakened me. You are entitled to three wishes.

The Price of Freedom06

Danial stares.

DANIAL

Three.

ZAHIR

Three.

DANIAL

And if I accidentally say, "I wish this conversation would end?"

ZAHIR

Intent matters. I am not a bureaucrat.

Danial almost smiles at the irony.

DANIAL

Do I have to rub that every time?

ZAHIR

Not now. We are connected. If you form a wish deliberately and direct it to me, I will know.

DANIAL

Can you do anything without a wish?

ZAHIR

Speak. Advise. Teach. Warn. Disappoint.

DANIAL

Physically?

ZAHIR

Not without a wish.

DANIAL

Can I undo a wish?

ZAHIR

Not by regretting it.

DANIAL

Can I ask for more wishes?

ZAHIR

Everyone asks that before they pretend they were not going to ask that. No. Three means three.

DANIAL

And what you grant stays granted?

The Price of Freedom07

ZAHIR

Unless your wish says otherwise. You do not rent a miracle.

Danial studies him.

DANIAL

What are you really?

A slight change in Zahir's expression.

ZAHIR

A longer answer than you need today.

DANIAL

And I can wait?

ZAHIR

For the wishes?

DANIAL

Yes.

ZAHIR

As long as you remain my master.

Danial looks at the lamp.

Money.

Power.

His parents' photograph in memory.

Claire being dragged away.

ZAHIR (CONT'D)

Most men do not take this long.

DANIAL

Most men probably make expensive mistakes.

He picks up the lamp and places it carefully in his backpack.

DANIAL (CONT'D)

I'm thinking.

Zahir smiles faintly and dissolves.

EXT. HUNTS POINT PUBLIC EXCHANGE - DAY

A massive industrial complex surrounded by trucks, chain fencing, loading bays -- and crowds.

Danial walks through looking for a parts dealer.

The Price of Freedom08

Then hears an AUCTIONEER over loudspeakers.

HARVEY GRANT (O.S.)

Lot one forty-six. Claire Reed. Former corporate executive. Registered Class A.

Danial stops cold.

INT. HUNTS POINT PUBLIC EXCHANGE - AUCTION FLOOR - DAY

HARVEY GRANT, 50s, practiced and cheerful, works the platform.

Claire stands under harsh lights in clean but simple clothes.

Her expression is emptied by exhaustion.

HARVEY

Education, executive experience, fluent in three languages. No dependents. Full civil reassignment completed.

Hands rise.

BUYER #1

One hundred.

BUYER #2

One fifty.

VICTOR ROSS, late 30s to 40s, expensive coat, arrogant ease, lifts a finger.

VICTOR

Two hundred thousand.

Claire scans the crowd.

Finds Danial.

For one second something flashes in her face.

Then it disappears.

No plea this time.

No hope.

Danial cannot breathe.

He turns.

Walks toward the exit.

The Price of Freedom09

EXT. HUNTS POINT EXCHANGE - CONTINUOUS

Danial gets ten steps outside.

Stops.

Claire's first plea returns.

CLAIRE (V.O.)

Danial, please!

Then her silence on the platform.

Danial closes his eyes.

DANIAL

(under his breath)

Zahir.

Zahir's voice enters his mind, calm.

ZAHIR (V.O.)

I am listening.

DANIAL

I want access to unlimited wealth. Any amount I intentionally need, available to me immediately, legally usable in the form I require.

A beat.

ZAHIR (V.O.)

Is that your wish?

Danial looks back at the building.

DANIAL

Yes.

A low RUSH of air.

ZAHIR (V.O.)

Then your wish is granted.

INT. HUNTS POINT EXCHANGE - AUCTION FLOOR - MOMENTS LATER

HARVEY

Four hundred thousand. Do I have four fifty?

DANIAL

Five hundred.

Heads turn.

Victor looks over.

The Price of Freedom10

Sees Danial's clothes.

Laughs.

VICTOR

You lost, friend?

DANIAL

No.

HARVEY

Five hundred thousand. Five fifty?

VICTOR

Six hundred.

DANIAL

Seven.

A murmur.

Claire stares at Danial now.

VICTOR

Eight.

DANIAL

One million.

The room quiets.

Victor's smile stiffens.

VICTOR

One point two.

DANIAL

One point five.

Victor turns toward Danial fully.

VICTOR

You know what you're bidding on?

DANIAL

Yes.

VICTOR

Two million.

DANIAL

Three.

The crowd reacts.

Victor studies him.

VICTOR

Four.
